WOMEN RUN Inc. supports Win, Inc. Formerly known as Women in Need, now simply as Win, this organization is improving the lives of homeless women and children in New York City “so the women can regain their independence and their children can look forward to a brighter future.” Women and their children make up 80% of the homeless population in New York City and since 1983 Win has been expanding its reach to meet their needs. Today, Win is winning: 90% of women who complete a Win Shelter program find permanent housing AND are still in that house two years later. With access to education, life skills training, child care and health and wellness interventions, women are gaining the skills, confidence and motivation to seek and secure gainful employment.

WOMEN RUN Inc. supports GEMS. Girls Educational & Mentoring Services, otherwise known as GEMS, is a New York City-based nonprofit that provides services to girls and young women aged 12-24 who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking.
The Department of Justice estimates the most frequent age of entry into the commercial sex industry in the United States is 12-24 years (www.usdoj.gov). In New York City, there are an estimated 2,200 children victimized by commercial sexual exploitation every year. GEMS outreach programs and services help these girls and young women exit the commercial sex industry and reach their full potential. WOMEN RUN Inc. supports the FLY Foundation. FLY—Financial Lift for Young Adults with Cancer—Foundation provides support to Massachusetts and Rhode Island residents, aged 19-39, who have been diagnosed with cancer. Funds may be used to reimburse for co-insurance, co-pays and living expenses including rent or mortgage payments and utilities.
Young adults, aged 19-39, make up less than 10% of all cancer patients, but this age group is the least likely to survive. Several factors contribute to the low survival rate including delays in diagnosis, a shortage of age-tailored treatments, as well as a lack of patient health insurance and financial resources. The FLY Foundation assists young adults who are braving those formidable years as they enter adulthood, when most pursue education, start a career, and possibly a family.

Greenlight for Girls is a Brussel, Belguim-based international non-profit organization that promotes Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to girls of all ages and backgrounds. According to the U.S. Dept. of Labor, women make up 9% of engineers today, and 19% of engineering undergraduates in the U.S. are girls.

In 2010, its inaugural year, WOMEN RUN Inc. donated both gifts in kind and seed funding to the Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts for The Life Work Project. The Life Work Project: Helping Women in Southeastern Massachusetts Achieve Economic Security through Education aims to reduce the number of women and children who live in poverty; and who are on public assistance.
The Fall River/New Bedford, MA region is home to unemployment rates of around 14 percent—whereas 9.3 percent was the national average in December 2010. Over 40 percent of girls do not receive their high school diplomas. With this backdrop, the program is focused on helping women achieve a family-sustaining wage and uses education as a path out of poverty. The beneficiaries are low-income women seeking educational advancement and economic independence. Women receive financial coaching and academic mentoring, and one result is each woman develops an actionable career development plan.
